‘It’s Clear That the Pandemic Is Accelerating,’ W.H.O. Official Says
Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, the World Health Organization’s regional director for Africa, said the pace of the coronavirus spread there is quickening.
I think what has been said internationally around this pandemic will apply very much in Africa. Until such time as we have access to an effective vaccine, I’m afraid we probably will have to live with a steady increase in the region with some hotspots having to be managed in a number of countries, as is happening now in South Africa, in Algeria, in Cameroon. On the African continent, there are now more than 200,000 confirmed Covid-19 cases, and sadly 5,000 people have lost their lives. We know that it took 98 days to reach the first 100,000 cases and only 19 days to move to 200,000 cases. So even though these cases in Africa account for less than 3 percent of the global total, it’s clear that the pandemic is accelerating. Ten of the 54 countries in Africa are currently driving the numbers, and they account for 75 percent of the total cases. Five countries account for 71 percent of the total deaths.
